MATHĒMA (2023-ongoing)
GENRE: Experimental Photography. MEDIUM: CYANOTYPE. YEAR: 2023. PROCESS: R > Print > Cyanotype > Digital > Print
The Mathēma series is an exploration of the intricate and often hidden beauty within generative mathematical formulas. Guided by a deep fascination with the intersection of mathematics and art, this collection seeks to transcend the abstract realms of numerical equations and bring forth a visual representation of their inherent complexity.
Mathematical formulas are translated into a tangible and graphic form, which is then printed using the cyanotype process. This process serves as an unconventional yet evocative canvas for the visualisation of these abstract concepts. Utilizing UV rays to develop the images, each piece in the series becomes a testament to the convergence of artistic expression and mathematical precision. The core concept underlying Mathēma lies in the meticulous arrangement of results, portraying the natural evolution, transmutation, and disintegration inherent in the permutations of random parameters embedded within the formulas. This deliberate orchestration reflects the cyclical nature of existence—mirroring the perpetual cycles of change that permeate the fabric of life. As the images unfold, viewers are invited to contemplate the profound parallels between the mathematical constructs and the universal principles governing the ephemerality of existence. The series offers a visual narrative that transcends the conventional boundaries of artistic representation, delving into the very essence of impermanence.
Through Mathēma, the observer is encouraged to navigate the intricate landscapes of generative mathematics, acknowledging the inherent beauty woven into the very fabric of numerical order. The cyanotype process, with its reliance on the transformative power of UV rays, becomes a metaphorical conduit for the cosmic forces that govern the eternal cycles of life and the perpetual dance of chaos and order. In essence, Mathēma serves as an intellectual and aesthetic contemplation of the profound interconnectedness between mathematics, art, and the ceaseless rhythms of existence.
Mathēma was part of the In Absentia Pavilion for The Wrong Biennale, 2023-2024.
